THE HISTORY OF PIPE DREAM COMICS

PIPE DREAM COMICS was founded by Joe Denny in 2004 with the first publication being AMERICANJISM Book One, a 109 page graphic novel about how fucked up everything is, from God to Man to Devil.   The name PIPE DREAM COMICS was inspired by the words of a former co-worker of Joe's who made it clear one day that making a living as a cartoonist was just a "pipe dream."   Mr. Denny promptly responded, saying truthfully that "I don't even smoke pot."   His co-worker retorted with "I think you do, you just don't know it yet."   At the time Mr. Denny was publishing a comic book called DENNY COMICS, of which only two issues saw the light of day in print in 1999.   After a two year hiatus from comics and a lot of experimentation with all sorts of substances, a newly inspired Mr. Denny pulled from out of his hat a comic fanzine called LECHERY, published by GIBOUS PRODUCTIONS in 2002.  

LECHERY is one of Mr. Denny's very favorite comics that he's seen printed.   It holds value to him not so much because he liked the art work, or the incestuous sexual content, profanities, and all round fuckedupness, but because of the fact that it was being printed up on a church's Xerox machine.   LECHERY saw five issues published, until Joe got inspired to do the type of book that he had been dreaming about for quite some time, a trippy, incestuous, and surreal take on the nature of entropy and chaos as being the fundamental states of symtropy and organization, essentially answering why bad things not just happen to good people, but why bad things happen at all for any reason.   Basically, why do we all suck so much?   If not for the contest of the unpredictability of life, what reasons do we have to go forward?   What reasons do we have to fight and conquer ourselves and in the process conquer god and master our destinies?   These were the themes of AMERICANJISM Books One, Two, and Three.

During the production of AMERICANJISM Book One, Joe recalled the prophetic words of his co-worker, "... your comics are just pipe dreams."     Mr. Denny was mind boggled at the fact that his co-employee had known so far in advance that indeed every page of AMERICANJISM was a pipe dream .   Naturally, the company name became PIPE DREAM COMICS .
